 Overview

A beautiful smile can impact a huge portion of our lives, from personal to professional relationships, as well as our own self-confidence. It is said that a great smile can be the single most influential feature in a person's social interactions. When thinking about a specific individual with an exceptional smile, there is a mental projection of happiness, positivity, and success.

Daily care and regular dentists visits are paramount to maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Without this regular maintenance, stains can build up, decay can occur, and gums can become inflamed and infected, causing a cascade of oral health complications. Healthy eating and drinking habits are important as well, when considering what we are able to control in affecting our oral wellness. Having said that, oral health can have a huge impact on overall wellness, not just in confidence building, but also in complications like abscess teeth, where toxins can build up that make us feel sick.

What's the Difference?

Hydrogen Peroxide Whitening

Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) is a naturally occurring chemical compound that decomposes into water and oxygen. It is because of the nature of its elements that it is regarded as a safe and effective means of conventional tooth whitening. H2O2 can cause irritation to gums if it comes in contact with them, so it is important to avoid contact. Concentrations above 10% are considered high concentrations, while those less than 10% are considered low concentrations for general public use. Most Over-The-Counter H2O2 whitening products range from 2% - 9% concentrations, while dental solutions may be as high as 18%.

Carbamide Peroxide Whitening

Typically, Carbamide Peroxide (CH6N2O3) products are more reliable, because the point of using CH6N2O3 is to achieve a higher concentration of H2O2 through active chemical decomposition without irritating of gums. (Our 44% Carbamide solutions decompose into 22% H2O2.)

Sodium Bicarbonate Whitening

Sodium Bicarbonate (NaHCO3) can be successfully used to remove stains and discolorations from the surface (enamel) of teeth, thereby given teeth a whiter and brighter appearance. Brushing your teeth with baking soda removes stains caused by drinking tea, coffee, and sodas as well as chewing tobacco and smoking. Mixing baking soda and water releases free radicals from the mixture.

Choosing What's Right For You

Most importantly, if you have never used a teeth whitening product before, you should first see a dentist for an oral examination and ask if you are a candidate for teeth whitening treatment. Only a professional should advise you on your oral health care issues and should be consulted respectively. Commonly, you should NOT use teeth whitening products if you are or have:
  • Pregnant
  • Sensitive Gums/Teeth
  • Allergies
  • Gum Disease
  • Cavities/Exposed Roots
  • Cosmetic Restoration
Most common tooth stains are a symptom of our consumption - a subject most of us are very passionate about, as we well should be. Stains typically occur on the surface of the enamel and can be kept clean through moderation and daily care. Some of us are a little more passionate about things like coffee, tea, wine, chocolates, and such, so the more frequent consumption of these kinds of foods and drinks causes faster build up of stains in a shorter amount of time. Additionally, smoking causes tar stains, which are very difficult to remove without treatment and is linked to coffee and alcohol consumption. Other forms of discoloration stem from a wide range of causes, such as genetics, aging, anti-biotics, and impact trauma. Not all discoloration can be treated by conventional whitening methods and require professional dentistry for health and safety purposes.

Peroxide based solutions offer the fastest whitening treatment in all cases. When combined with short-wave Ultra Violet light (~480 nm), the whitening process speeds up to 30% more effective by releasing Hydroxl radicals, which has a greater oxidization efficacy than even food grade chlorine or ozone. Since

Non-Peroxide solutions are alternatives for people who may have peroxide allergies or reactions to peroxide based solutions. There are many "natural" products in this category, but you should always research what you are considering and get a dentist's advice before deciding.

The three main solutions are fairly common for a few reasons. All are household products we are familiar with. All are naturally occurring, or based off a naturally occurring compound and are generally safe for over-the-counter products. All have been the focus of proven teeth whitening home remedies that lead to research. All do an exceptional job at keeping enamel free of stains without being heavily abrasive.
